Advice at 20 Years Old (When the student is ready…)

When did you decide to start a new habit, see things differently, change how you lead, or tune into life differently?

Why then? What made that day so special? What made that moment the moment that would change every other moment?

There’s debate on this quote’s origin, “When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.” Some say it was Buddha, while others point to Lao Tzu, but it feels a little Karate Kid to me because who doesn’t love Mr. Miyagi?

In any case, it doesn’t matter who said it because the vital question is why then or perhaps why not today? My hunch is that the answer is clear; it’s all about awareness. At that moment, you had the opportunity to see something clearly for the first time, even though it had always been there.

The trouble is, clarity is tough to discover on a hamster wheel.

Twenty years ago, this student met one of his new teachers — it was a life-changing moment. Like Elvis and “normal,” this teacher’s teenage years have now left the building, but she still helps me stay mentally young by holding up new lenses to see through.

This week’s video is about a few things that I’ve discovered from my youngest daughter, Grady, who is now the big 2–0.

There’s also a second part to this quote, “When the student is truly ready, The teacher will disappear, but I hope that moment never comes.

As always, thanks for watching, sharing, and subscribing.

This week’s shout-outs go to those in our peloton who are also celebrating birthdays this weekend like Bobby Kountz, Shauna, Claudia, Mitch, and, “don’t forget Drake, Dad,” as Grady reminded me — because ya know, Drake and I are tight.

I’m also sharing a post from a friend, Louie Rahil, MBA, on how to get past feeling like a fraud just in case you know someone who has ever felt that way. Hint, up to 75% of us have. Click HERE to read.

Until next week, remember to pause, breathe, and reflect, and, of course, have fun storming the castle!
